A Little Piece Of My Dog I Can Carry Everywhere
I don’t usually buy “things” for myself. Not since my old dog passed.
My last dog, Toby, was a fluffy white rescue mutt with a terrible habit of stealing socks and a tail that never stopped wagging. He lived with me for 11 years, and when he was gone, I couldn’t bring myself to replace him with anything. No new pets, no dog-themed mugs, no silly keychains. It felt like cheating, somehow. Like nothing could ever come close.
That was until I found this tiny leather dog charm hanging on a rack in a small boutique shop.
I was just browsing, killing time while waiting for a friend. And there it was: a little white dog, stitched from soft leather, with floppy ears and a red collar. The tongue was sticking out, just like Toby’s when he was panting after a walk. I stared at it for a minute, then bought it without thinking.
That night, I clipped it to my beat-up canvas tote—the same bag I’d carried for years, the one Toby used to curl up next to while I worked—and I didn’t think much of it. But now, six months later, I can’t imagine my bag without it.

It’s The Smallest Kind Of Comfort
Pet grief is weird. People don’t talk about it much, but it sticks with you. You still find yourself talking to an empty corner, still reaching down to scratch a head that’s not there. You still walk a little slower on the way home, like you’re waiting for someone to come bounding around the corner.
This dog bag charm isn’t Toby. It can’t nudge my hand for scratches, or follow me to the kitchen hoping for scraps. But it’s something small. Something soft. Something that looks at me with that same happy, dumb grin every time I reach for my keys.
It’s made from thick, full-grain leather, the kind that gets softer and warmer the more you touch it. The stitching is clean, the red collar is just the right pop of color, and there’s even a little leather tail that wiggles when you move the bag. It’s well-made, too. No flimsy plastic, no cheap paint. Just something that feels like it was stitched with care.
I catch myself talking to it sometimes, just like I used to talk to Toby. “C’mon, boy,” I’ll say, patting the bag before I leave the house. “Let’s go.” It’s silly, I know. But it makes the walk to the bus stop a little less lonely.

It Connects You To Other Dog People
The best part about this charm? It’s like a secret handshake with other dog lovers.
Strangers stop me all the time to ask about it. The barista at my local café pointed it out last week. “That’s a happy little dog,” she said. “I have one just like him at home.” A woman in the grocery store leaned over to tell me her old golden retriever used to do the exact same “tongue out” face. Even the kid at the checkout stared at it for a full minute before saying, “I want one for my dog.”
I gave one to my neighbor, who just lost her 15-year-old labrador. She cried when she saw it. “He always wore a red collar,” she said. Now she keeps it on her keys, and texts me every time someone comments on it. “It’s like he’s still with me,” she wrote.
It’s the perfect dog lover bag charm because it’s so understated. It doesn’t scream “I miss my dog” or “I’m obsessed with my pet.” It’s just a quiet, little nod to the joy dogs bring into our lives. It doubles as a leather keychain charm, too—no more digging through the bottom of my bag for my keys in the rain.
And because it’s handmade, every single one is slightly different. No two noses are exactly the same, no two collars are stitched the same way. It feels special. Like someone cared enough to make it just right.

You Don’t Have To Be Grieving To Love It
You don’t have to have lost a dog to love this charm. I’ve given them to friends with new puppies, to coworkers who dream of having a dog someday, to family members who spoil their pets rotten.
My cousin clipped hers to her work bag, and says it makes her long days feel a little better. My best friend keeps hers on her car keys, and says it makes every drive feel like she’s bringing her pup along. It’s not just a trinket. It’s a little piece of that dog love, that warmth, that comfort, you can carry with you.
This little handmade dog charm from Honey Ant Handmade isn’t just an accessory. It’s a reminder. That even when they’re not here, the love stays. That even the smallest things can make a hard day a little softer. That you don’t have to have a dog right now to be a dog person.
If you’re missing a pup. If you’re dreaming of one. If you just need a little bit of that dog joy in your everyday life—this charm is for you.
It’s just a tiny leather dog. But it’s become one of my favorite things in the world.🐶🐶🐶
